Progress is Inevitable
Introduction: In a free-wheeling interview, Chintan Kalra of Parikrama speaks to Puja Goyal on the present rock scene in India
Parikrama needs no formal introduction to the rockers of India janta. Their original "Till I'm No One Again" featured on the GIR-I [RSJ magazine] and "But it rained" on GIR-V dedicated to the Kargil heroes, shows that they have the balls and are raring to go high. PARIKRAMA’S stage presence is. PARIKRAMA has outdone Pink Floyd By Doing "Another brick in the wall" better than Pink Floyd themselves.
Puja: Is it difficult for an Indian rock band to promote them selves and be recognized at par with international bands?
Parikrama: Well… Do you think it's difficult for a Canadian Kathak dancer to be popular and accepted in India? But this paradigm is shifting fast with the advent of the Internet and a fierce revival of independent labels and releases. If the Italians and Brazilians can be welcomed in China, Indian music, especially rock, will transcend. Amen.
Puja: What do you think is the Indian Rock scene for the moment?? Do you see any progress?
Parikrama: Progress is inevitable where there's an iota of creativity, and the scene here is 'Rockin'. The issue is the rate, tempo, and speed of it all. There are definitely more genres, niche or mainstream, that are available to the Indian listener today, compared to just FILM / CLASSICAL / LIGHT CLASSICAL in the past. Today, there at least 2 - 5 releases a month by Indian rock bands, pentagram, zero, strange brew etc. most of them are self-produced, and that's by no means an inferior path. It’s a matter of time.
Puja: Would you recommend youngsters to join the rock scene and is it commercially viable?
Parikrama: Only problem is that there's no rock scene to "JOIN" ... you love your music... rock/jazz/Hindi whatever ... go out there and make a scene ... happen
Puja: What is the essence of Indian rock?
Parikrama: That there is, has always been, and forever will be that "audience" for this brand of rock. In each and every city u can pin on the map. We can swear… and besides, ROCK fans run on dynamos ... we feed off the energy i.e.
Puja: How would you define Indian rock, and where does Parikrama fit it?
Parikrama: Me thinks we fits right between the "desire" and "need" to ROCK and Roll.
Puja: What is Parikrama all about in 3 words?
Parikrama: "nitindilipsaurabhchintansubirsonam","rockjazzbluessoulreggaehard" and "peacetreeslovesexcheers”.... basically
Puja: Last words for Moksha/Parikrama fans would be...
