Precious Paintings
Introduction: Puja Goyal meets Triveni Vinod, one of the few gem painters in the Country....
Article: It was a sunny afternoon as I looked forward for a tête-à-tête with Artiste Treveni Vinod who has combined her expertise in gemology and design with art. It was not only her expertise in the field of gem painting that triggered the artist within her. She wants to redefine painting and says with a smile, ‘ Let me give value to art!!’ Not only this, she says, that, she had started painting as a hobby, after her sons grew up and she was free of domestic responsibility… this in turn became a profession with a unique combination of talent, expertise and passion.
Treveni has been painting for less than a year has already held two exhibitions and wants that anyone who buys her painting should be happy and believes in having a personal touch. Her paintings have a traditional approach and have something to say or imply. There is a touch of spiritualism, bliss, growth and prosperity, space and elements of goddesses, depth and seriousness that surround her painting. Initially starting of with the five elements, (earth, fire etc) she has tried to bring forth a mixed form of media through paintings. Each painting adorns one precious gem or stone, while in some she has used wood, pearls, copper, gold and sand finish, according to its theme and motive.
Treveni very candidly added that ‘we all wear expensive jewelry when we go out, but when we come back home, we remove them and stack them in our closets. The jewels that we buy with so much care are not seen as often as they should have been seen. It would be wonderful to adorn your walls with them.’… This is certainly is a different way of wearing and appreciating your jewelry.
There are not many gem painters in India, and Treveni is one of her kind. She has daringly approached painting to not only adorn art but also to make her contribution to the society in some manner. The exhibition held recently in Bangalore on the 4th of September 2004 at the Park, was with the motive of donating generously a large portion of the sales proceeds to Bangalore School of Music.
