Neeru Kumar, a graduate from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad has been in the business of textile designing for the past twenty years. During the course of these years, she has been able to develop and experiment with new techniques, as well as preserve traditional art forms of weaving; combining both traditional techniques with modern and contemporary designs.
Neeru has not only provided an outlet to rare forms of weaving namely, ikat, jamdani and kantha; she has also helped preserve talent and fast diminishing weavers. Each item, be it, a stole, kurta, quilt or sari etc, have been hand woven, and as such are not mass produced. You will not find a duplication of the same in her store. They are traditionally woven, while being supervised and designed by her. Neeru says, “These are traditional works with an international feel.” She entered the international market in the year 1990 before exploring the Indian market. The reason was simple, it was more interesting to work there and take Indian art forms in textile to a foreign audience.
Most of her works are exported to countries like U.S.A, U.K., Japan and Australia. Her label is recognized all over the globe. Neeru Kumar’s products are displayed at Maison & Objet fair in Paris. Her products are sold under her own label ‘Neeru Kumar’ in leading stores worldwide such as Le Bon Marche in France, Liberty & Selfridges in U.K., in addition to working with designer labels such as Maki Textile Studio in Japan, Jack Larsen in USA, etc. She has been featured in magazines like Vogue, Architectural Digest, and Home Textile.
She has always wanted to work with textile and therefore one thing happened after the other. “I didn’t imagine the distance I would travel.” Her range of clothes caters to working women, evening wear and even men, she adds that, “My textile and clothes are for someone who understand textile and appreciates good work. One does not have to go through a million of pieces to find a good work.”
Her repertoire consists of two principle ranges: textiles for the home and garments for women and, men, both traditional and western. Her fabrics are crafted into bedcovers, cushion covers, throws & wall hangings as also accessories such as shawls & scarves to complement her extensive garments range which are either woven printed or embroidered Shibori is used in some of them to create stunning effects on silk, cotton and linen blends. These are immensely popular with all age groups and cater to both the high-end buyer and the down to earth one looking for utility, easy maintenance and value for money.
