A tribute to John Lennon

INSTANT KARMA - The Campaign to save Darfur, a two CD album was compiled to aid Amnesty International's efforts in Darfur. If John Lennon would have been alive, he would have been heading the entire campaign for peace and solidarity. John would have also been 67 years of age. The album (compiled with permission from Yoko Ono) aims at creating an awareness of the ongoing conflict in Darfur where more than half a million have already died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord.

The album contains the songs of Lennon sung by more than a dozen artists who have interpreted his music their way; and spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog.
U2, Green Day, Snow Patrol, Mexican rock band Jaguares, Postal Service and R.E.M. add a lot of energy to the songs which are quite wonderful to listen to. Corinne Bailey Rae's adds a gospel touch to "I'm Losing You" which is Lennon's best written song.

While the intention behind the album is sincere the album has its low downs. Christina Aguilera version of Mother sounded like a cranky version of the song forcing you to skip the song midway. Similarly, Avril Lavigne and Jack Johnson were a huge disappointment; their version of Imagine left nothing to the imagination.

Whether the album will help the world realize the calamities of Darfur is yet to be determined; but choosing John Lennon as an instrument to compile a collection for Darfur is an idea well- explored.
