Indians are waking up to the possibility of the web becoming a prominent leader in providing both news and entertainment to the browsers. It is not only providing content but also helping corporate and individuals to expand and connect.

Nitin Sethi, journalist and editor of www.glamsham.com elaborates, "There has been a lot of demand for information for and about Indians on the net; our site therefore caters predominantly to the Indian market." Glamsham.com a Mumbai based website (started in 1999) was founded by Nitin Sethi and Bhavik Shah, to provide a business solution to Bollywood and is presently the third largest portal in India.

On the other hand, sites like Rediff.com (founded 1996) provide an ideal platform for Indians worldwide to connect with one another and is committed to provide world-class online consumer service offerings to Indians worldwide so that they are able to monetise its large online consumer base. Glamsham.com according to Sethi is, "a site that is basically industry driven, and has information for the industry individuals. The site not only indulges in getting traffic from youngsters, but the real people it is targeted at is the industry people who get their information from Glamsham and know what is happening around them. It helps film producers to make money." Similarly, sites like Santabanta, MSN, Yahoo, etc, have tried to concentrate all forms of entertainment on one platform.

Fanciful e-cards, Wallpapers of Celebrities, Cartoons, Photo Galleries, Recipes, Movie Reviews, Current Affairs, Gossip, E-mail Accounts, Messengers, Online Chatrooms, Matchmaking Schemes, Contests, Games, Online Shopping, Free Web Pages, Streaming Music Videos, Music Promos and recently introduced free Blogs and Radio Channels on the net, constitute some of the entertainment content on web portals.

Free Online Web Spaces have become sure fire signs to keep individuals logging onto their sites. Once an individual creates an online journal on one site it becomes unnecessary to create it somewhere else, this results in a sort of a marriage between the browser and the site. MSN and Yahoo have tried to concentrate everything on their site. An individual not only browses for information, he creates an email, blog, website, listens to the radio and chats on the same website.

Websites have become a hub for games like, literati, word max, solving puzzles, and treasure hunts are in the forefront. Besides these, there are Casinos, betting houses, online poker etc, which individuals engage in; some of them are genuine but most of them result in the individual loosing a lot of money from his pocket and gaining a few viruses in his computer.

Music on the Internet is still a very disputable topic. Musicians who were previously annoyed at piracy, have now logged in 30 or 40 second samples on their official websites, and used them to exhibit their talent. Piracy is still an issue though and people like Nitin Sethi are apprehensive about allowing music on their sites. Sites like Yahoo, MSN, etc, have allowed online streaming of music and videos from their messengers and websites to encourage individuals to log in, but they do not allow you to download them.

The idea behind all this is to retain browsers and attract advertisements. Nitin says, "Glamsham is a hundred percent advertisement driven portal. There is a lot of money in advertisement on the net. Most sell only small spaces for advertisement and are mostly targeted to the U.S. but most of our revenue comes from here. Glamsham has especially helped the theatre world in Mumbai. All theatre activities are logged in and any information that one requires, one can get from there."

While entertainment is being concentrated entirely on the Internet, the ones suffering are businesses of magazine owners, music shops and gaming houses. When you can download hundred pictures of Aishwarya Rai or Preity Zinta on the Internet or listen to music 24/7 on your messenger, who would want to go buy a magazine, CD or play poker?
